They're just spell vessels, mostly. Like tiny familiars. Or magic envelopes that move around on their own.

They're not really related to any of this at all, I was just using the example of how they work as a possible connection to this. Here, look at this. It's a passage on transmutation. It probably wouldn't work like this, my magic is different, but it'd be a good basis.
